>>Taxonomy and etymology

The Oenpelli python was assigned to a taxonomy in 1977 by Gow, who placed it in the genus `*`F33f`_`[Python`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Python_(genus)]`_`f`*.`:cite-ref-gow-2-1[`F5bf`_`[2`#cite-note-gow-2]`_`f] It was then categorised by `F33f`_`[Cogger`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Harold_Cogger]`_`f and Cameron as a species of `*Morelia`*.`:cite-ref-cogger-11-0[`F5bf`_`[11`#cite-note-cogger-11]`_`f] In 1984, `F33f`_`[Wells and Wellington`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Wells_and_Wellington_affair]`_`f placed it into a new genus `*Nyctophilopython`*, and in 2014, a work by Reynolds, Niemiller, and Revell proposed to classify it as `*`F33f`_`[Simalia`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Simalia]`_`f`*.`:cite-ref-reynolds-12-0[`F5bf`_`[12`#cite-note-reynolds-12]`_`f]

The `F33f`_`[dorsal`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Dorsum_(anatomy)]`_`f colour pattern is dark olive-brown with darkened blotches. The belly is pale and dull, varying from cream to yellow.`:cite-ref-nt-threatened-5-1[`F5bf`_`[5`#cite-note-nt-threatened-5]`_`f]

The Oenpelli python is able to change its `F33f`_`[skin colouration`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Animal_colouration]`_`f, which tends to be lighter at night and darker in the daytime.`:cite-ref-jcm-9-2[`F5bf`_`[9`#cite-note-jcm-9]`_`f]

The eggs of the Oenpelli python have been described as "huge".`:cite-ref-mur97-20-0[`F5bf`_`[20`#cite-note-mur97-20]`_`f] At 110.5 by 60 mm (4.35 by 2.36 in), they are almost twice the size of those for the related amethystine python (`*`F33f`_`[Simalia amethystina`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Amethystine_python]`_`f`*), which are reported as 70–98 by 45–56 mm (2.8–3.9 by 1.8–2.2 in).`:cite-ref-mur97-20-1[`F5bf`_`[20`#cite-note-mur97-20]`_`f]

>>Behaviour

The Oenpelli python is `F33f`_`[nocturnal`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Nocturnality]`_`f and inhabits rock crevices, trees, and caves.`:cite-ref-jcm-9-3[`F5bf`_`[9`#cite-note-jcm-9]`_`f]

It feeds on birds in fruiting trees, and has been speculated to specialise in eating birds.`:cite-ref-jcm-9-4[`F5bf`_`[9`#cite-note-jcm-9]`_`f] Adults prey on medium-to-large mammals, such as `F33f`_`[possum`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Phalangeriformes]`_`f or large `F33f`_`[macropods`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Macropodidae]`_`f.`:cite-ref-nt-threatened-5-2[`F5bf`_`[5`#cite-note-nt-threatened-5]`_`f] Captive specimens eat birds and rodents.`:cite-ref-jcm-9-5[`F5bf`_`[9`#cite-note-jcm-9]`_`f]

It is an `F33f`_`[ambush predator`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Ambush_predator]`_`f that remains motionless for long periods.

>>Distribution and habitat

The Oenpelli python occurs in a restricted range in the Northern Territory, in the sandstone outcrops of western Arnhem Land.`:cite-ref-nt-threatened-5-3[`F5bf`_`[5`#cite-note-nt-threatened-5]`_`f]`:cite-ref-cogger-11-1[`F5bf`_`[11`#cite-note-cogger-11]`_`f]

The species is found in `F33f`_`[habitat`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Habitat]`_`f located on a sandstone `F33f`_`[massif`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Massif]`_`f, in the regions surrounding the upper reaches of the `F33f`_`[Cadell`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Cadell_River]`_`f, `F33f`_`[South Alligator`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=South_Alligator_River]`_`f and `F33f`_`[East Alligator`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=East_Alligator_River]`_`f rivers. It is territorial, roaming between discrete positions, such as overhangs and caves in sandstone gorges or in a shady tree. Sightings are also reported in the region's woodland, heathland, and open rocky plains. It is noted as having an association with the Kombalgie sandstone gorges.`:cite-ref-cogger-11-2[`F5bf`_`[11`#cite-note-cogger-11]`_`f] It is said to be associated with sandstone rock outcrops with dense vegetation.`:cite-ref-jcm-9-6[`F5bf`_`[9`#cite-note-jcm-9]`_`f]

>>Conservation status

The total population of `*N. oenpelliensis`* is poorly surveyed, and no study has been made of the rate of its decline. This is partly due to the inaccessibility of the region, a factor that may help the preservation of the species. The conservation status of `*Nyctophilopython oenpelliensis`* is listed by the Northern Territory Government as vulnerable to extinction. This has been evaluated by known threatening factors, such as altered land use and fire regimes, and population inferred from the relative abundance of its prey. This is estimated to be below 10,000, which is inferred from several factors. As a large predator, the species is particularly vulnerable to declines in available prey. These larger mammals are more susceptible to changes in land use and threats such as introduced species. Suitable habitat is also limited in the distribution range of the species. The species is known to be illegally collected for private use, which is likely to impact on some subpopulations. This threat is limited by the inaccessibility of its habitat, the same factor that has restricted study of the species. Variation and decline in subpopulations has not been fully evaluated. It is found within a conservation reserve known as `F33f`_`[Kakadu National Park`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Kakadu_National_Park]`_`f.`:cite-ref-nt-threatened-5-4[`F5bf`_`[5`#cite-note-nt-threatened-5]`_`f]
